Ein wesentliches Ziel des Projektes war die grenzüberschreitende Charakterisierung der unterkarbonischen Kohlenkalk-Gruppe (und im Nachgang der devonischen Massenkalke) in Belgien, Frankreich, Deutschland und den Niederlanden, um die Standortsuche für künftige Geothermiekraftwerke zu erleichtern und um eine CO2-neutrale Wärmenutzung in NWE zu unterstützen. Durch das Zusammentragen und Auswerten des gemeinsamen Datenschatzes und durch die transnationale Erhebung neuer Daten aus Bohrungen und seismischen Kampagnen sollten Tiefe, Mächtigkeit, Struktur und Fazies dieses hydrothermalen Reservoirs charakterisiert und die bisher unbekannten tiefengeothermischen Potenziale der Karbonatgesteine im Rhenoherzynischen Becken ermittelt werden.
